An Online Legal Community Devoted to Connecting Peers

First, Onit won the Gold Globee Award for Company Response of the Year in the category of “Creative Ways Companies are Giving Back During COVID-19.”

In March of 2020, we introduced a comprehensive thought leadership initiative, Lean Into LegalOps. The program’s original goal was to connect in-house legal professionals to share best practices during the pandemic via masterclasses, webinars, small virtual gatherings and more. Lean Into LegalOps had more than 3,000 registrations in 2020 alone and has now expanded into a vibrant offering the includes Europe and shared wisdom from Fortune 500 legal operations leaders (examples of past programs can be found here and here.)

Corporate legal professionals are welcome to join the complimentary program and can sign up here for the U.S. and here for Europe.

A Free Suite of Business Continuity Apps

Next, we earned the Bronze Globee Award for Best Technology in the category of “To Combat and Reduce the Impact of COVID-19.”

In response to the pandemic and the challenges it presented for corporations, Onit offered a free suite of COVID-19 business continuity and workflow solutions built on its automation platform Apptitude. These Apps were intended to help companies navigate new challenges such as managing a remote workforce. They included:

  • The Return-to-Work Risk Assessment App, which surveys employees regarding risk factors for COVID-19 transmission and allows human resources and management to determine return-to-work dates and protocol.
  • The Contract Compliance Issue Tracking App, that provides a mechanism for companies to log and manage issues reported by external parties, such as force majeure clauses, that impact the ability to deliver on a contract.
  • The Work Delegation App, which collected and reported information from employees having to unexpectedly leave work due to illness, lack of childcare or other personal issues.
  • The Business Standup/Situation Reporting App, that enables managers and leadership to quickly establish a framework for offsite team communications, including managing agendas and aggregating updates for management reporting.
  • The COVID-19 Self Reporting App, which empowered employees to self-report when they have experienced symptoms or been diagnosed with COVID-19.

An Award-Winning Year

Onit and BT plc Named Finalists for Legalweek Leaders in Tech Law Awards

Onit and London-based BT Group plc have been named joint finalists for the Legalweek Leaders in Tech Law Awards 2021 in the category of Legal Operations. The awards recognize innovation in the legal technology sector and precedent-setting, game-changing projects and initiatives.

Scroll down to hear David Griffin, Head of Legal Technology and Change at BT, talk about the company’s award-winning transformation in the Onit podcast.

This news is even more exciting since BT earned a significant win with the Legal Innovation Awards in June. The team took home the prize in the category of Future of Legal Services Innovation – In-House Legal Operations. This is the second year in a row an Onit customer has won this award.

BT replaced manual and disconnected process and management tools and helped the department manage workload and matters across the teams from inception to closure. Onit’s business automation and workflow platform Apptitude played a pivotal role in BT’s transformation, helping manage their matters and documents. The system was live for matter management and real-time reporting within three months, enabling trend analysis and analytics across work done by the enterprise team.

The BT legal department plans to build and deploy new custom solutions on Onit Apptitude to automate legal operations and compliance processes and better collaborate with business users outside of legal.

BT’s technology implementation results speak for themselves. For every hour automation returns to their lawyers, they can reinvest that time back into something more productive for their company.

Congratulations to BT on this additional recognition from the Legalweek Leaders in Tech Law Awards! Onit is excited to partner with them to support their innovative vision.

A CLM Solution With None of the Risks and All the Rewards – Introducing Onit’s CLM 60-Day Money-Back Guarantee

If you’re in corporate legal, you’re probably all too familiar with the concept of contract lifecycle management (CLM) by now, even if you haven’t implemented a CLM solution yet. CLM is one of the hottest technologies in the legal space today, but much of the talk is more hype than substance.

CLM is an area that’s ripe for digital transformation, but not all technologies actually deliver. When you’re choosing a CLM solution, ROI matters – and to prove how serious we are about that, we’re offering a 60-day money-back guarantee on Onit’s CLM software.

In this podcast, Matt DenOuden, Onit’s Senior Vice President of Global Sales, discusses the CLM money-back guarantee and how to get from hype to payoff.

CLM Tool ROI

Contracts are all about money, whether you’re selling your own goods and services or paying to secure the goods and services of others. That means that the efficiency of the contracting process is directly tied to revenue – the faster you can complete your contracts, the faster you get to making revenues or realizing the benefits of the money you’re spending.

A vast majority of legal teams (86%) say they need to modernize by using more technology, while 71% of in-house lawyers say they feel stuck doing low-value work, including manual contract work that requires multiple systems.

If you can find a way to reclaim that time and substantially shrink the overall contract cycle, you’re going to have a very tangible impact on your ROI. The trick is finding the right CLM solution.

CLM From Onit

The Onit CLM solution stands out from others in the space because we took the time to perfect it before we marketed it – we weren’t going to enter the marketplace until we had a market-leading product. We started our company 10 years ago by custom-building a CLM solution for a client and have continued to invest in and evolve our solution ever since.

Onit’s CLM software provides a strong workflow that’s configurable to your individual needs. We don’t just presume that the steps in your process for a certain contract type are going to be the same for the next. The flexibility in our tool allows you to always have transparency into your contracting process.

Our CLM AI also significantly accelerates contract review and extraction with:

  • ReviewAI, which reviews and redlines contracts such as NDAs, MSAs, SOWs and purchase agreements in less than two minutes
  • Smart Checklists in the ReviewAI Word Add-In, which turns playbook checks into intelligent, actionable and collaborative tasks.
  • ExtractAI, which extracts contract data and obtains usable data from executed, legacy and third-party paper contracts in less than five seconds.

We believe so strongly in our CLM technology that we’re giving you a 60-day money-back guarantee.

Try It Today

It takes 30.9 days for the average contract to be approved without CLM technology. Chances are, you and your business stakeholders would like to see that 30 days shortened significantly. With Onit CLM, you can make that happen.

Most software trial offers give you nothing more than a demo of the product. We’re offering a bona fide trial period at our own risk, backed by a commitment to return your money if you’re not happy after 60 days. Even with an average contract cycle of 30 days, you get 60 days for all your stakeholders to try our software, understand its value and realize the extent to which it can improve your ROI.

To start your money-back trial today, visit onit.com/60-day-guarantee or email us at [email protected].

Happy 10th “Onitversary” to Us! Celebrating a Decade of Growth, Expansion and Investment in Legal Tech

What a decade it’s been for Onit and legal tech. We’re celebrating our 10th anniversary with several significant milestones over a decade of groundbreaking achievements in legal technology.

Onit was co-founded in 2011 by CEO Eric M. Elfman, COO Eric Smith, Vice President of Marketing Jill Black and Vice President of Products John Gilman. Their goal: to create legal tech that makes it easier for in-house counsel to practice law.

Today, Onit has more than 400 employees worldwide and 10,550 corporate legal and law firm customers and offers workflow automation, enterprise legal management, AI, contract lifecycle management and more. Going forward, we plan to continue our strategic growth and expand our offerings to give corporate legal departments even more of the legal tech tools they need to do their best work.

“Across the company, we prioritize customers and innovation. When you have 400+ employees worldwide focused on the same goals, you create powerful results.” Eric M. Elfman CEO & Co-Founder OnitReinventing Legal Tech

Onit was originally co-founded in 2011 with a focus on legal project management. However, the focus shifted when Elfman and his co-founders brainstormed ideas and made a discovery: Despite half a trillion dollars spent every year in enterprise software, very little of it moved the needle in terms of productivity for end-users. Instead, most workers managed their day through email, which didn’t always work for complex organizations and projects.

Onit’s first platform, Apptitude, solved 95% of the workflow challenges presented by the email-based environment. The company started by creating legal tech on Apptitude for the same solution that Elfman’s first company Datacert addressed – enterprise legal management (ELM), an area that was ripe for disruption.

“It's hard to believe that Onit has grown headcount over 500% and revenue over 900% in the four short years I’ve been here. I can’t imagine what lies ahead over the next four years.” York Richards CFO OnitFrom Startup to Scale-Up

Onit has gone from two employees and $25,000 in revenue when co-founded to a company with more than 400 employees in 2021. We have helped transform how Fortune 500 companies and billion-dollar legal departments drive operational improvements, processing over $5 billion in legal invoices in the past year alone.

The company’s leadership sees Onit as a scale-up now, a company that will continue to grow in reach and revenue while still committed to the disruption and innovation of its startup roots.

“Back in 2012 or so, Paul Zengilowski was my first introduction to Onit. From then on, I was hooked! He, John Gilman and Eric Smith convinced my employer at the time, ZS Associates, to be one the first five Onit clients. I will be forever thankful for the intersection of our lives.” Stasha Jain Senior GC OnitDespite the pandemic, we continue to be one of the fastest-growing tech companies in the Houston area. While others resorted to layoffs, we increased our headcount by 22% and grew revenue by 36% in 2020.

Onit and our customers have used our platforms and products to build over 5,600 Apps and solutions that automate critical enterprise-wide processes such as marketing, sales, HR and compliance. We also launched three new AI-based products in the last year (Precedent, ReviewAI and ExtractAI) and acquired three companies since May 2019 – legal operations software provider SimpleLegal, legal tech AI provider McCarthyFinch and AXDRAFT, a document generation and automation platform.

“By far and away what I enjoy the most about working with Onit is the people. It is rare to get the opportunity to work with people you admire for their work ethic, intelligence and sense of humor. My Onit family checks all of those boxes.” Yogi Maxwell Sr. Software Support Engineer Onit

Looking Ahead for Onit and Legal Tech

Meet the New Onit User Interface: A Quicker Way to Tackle Automation and Workflow for Corporate Legal

The technology demands for most corporate legal departments have become increasingly more complex in the past decade – especially for automation and workflow. With corporate legal prioritizing efficiency, cost control and collaboration across the enterprise, technology must be flexible enough to meet ever-evolving needs and easy enough to use to encourage widespread adoption.

Onit understands, which is why we’re excited to announce our new user interface. The enhanced design allows corporate legal professionals, Onit App builders and business collaborators in departments such as compliance, sales and IT to create, collaborate and get more done in fewer clicks.

The new UI provides a cleaner visual language, enhanced indicators and status effects and a more straightforward way to identify and act on pertinent data and deadlines. Powered by Onit’s no-code platforms for workflow automation (Apptitude) and AI-based business intelligence (Precedent), the even more intuitive experience maximizes productivity for enterprise legal management, contract lifecycle management, legal service requests, legal holds and more.

No Automation and Workflow Challenge Too Big or Too Small to Solve with Onit

Our new UI joins a variety of Onit innovations that make it simpler to streamline and automate critical processes. Thanks to our no-code platforms and intuitive UIs, legal operations professionals and in-house counsel can create time-saving, automated Apps that simplify automation and workflow.

Our Process Builder provides a visually oriented, drag-and-drop interface that allows users of all levels of technical proficiency to build workflows. It removes learning hurdles by making it easy for users to understand how to build applications, allowing corporate legal to create Apps in minutes.

To see this in motion, check out our Hack the House competition.  Corporate legal professionals from companies including Colgate-Palmolive, Corteva Agriscience and McDonald’s identified business needs for areas such as diversity, IP and HR and created Apps and solutions to meet them in three weeks. In the end, Team IP won by creating Apps and a solution that automated the trademark renewal process.

Onit’s AI also provides a valuable edge for automation and workflow. ReviewAI uses artificial intelligence to quickly review, redline and edit all types of contracts, increasing productivity by more than 51%. ExtractAI leverages AI-based software to extract and obtain usable data from executed, legacy and third-party paper contracts.

What the Future With AI Looks Like for Enterprise Legal Management: InvoiceAI Coming Soon

As technology continues to evolve, many in-house counsel and legal professionals wonder what their future with artificial intelligence (AI) looks like. Will legal AI technology replace lawyers? Will it make work easier or more complicated?

Fortunately, we already have indicators of legal AI success. It’s providing commendable results in contract lifecycle management, accelerating contract approvals by up to 70%. Now, AI is also enhancing enterprise legal management software.

InvoiceAI, the new, AI-enabled invoice review solution for enterprise legal management, is coming to Onit and SimpleLegal next month. It lets corporate legal departments leverage the power of AI to boost efficiency in invoice review drastically. When InvoiceAI does a first-pass invoice review, in-house counsel reset their activities to review only the invoices that genuinely need their attention. This frees them up to focus time on more critical, higher-value work that helps the company succeed.

The Future with Legal AI Technology for Legal Operations

More and more companies are incorporating the benefits of AI in their workflows every day. In their annual global survey on artificial intelligence, The State of AI in 2020, McKinsey & Company found that half of their respondents had adopted AI in at least one function in their organizations. The survey also found that companies were increasingly using AI as a tool for generating value, particularly in the form of revenues.

Recent research from Gartner agrees. According to Gartner, by 2023, having AI will be a substantial competitive advantage for companies, bringing a 30% increase in efficiency to document completion and contract negotiation processes via AI-enabled contract lifecycle management tools. They also predict that, by 2023, 90% of multinational global enterprises will be investing in those solutions, as will 50% of regional midsize businesses.

What do these AI advantages look like when quantified?

Onit conducted a study of its ReviewAI software to quantify the time and cost savings for its pre-signature contract review AI software. The study found that lawyers were 51.5% more productive when using ReviewAI than when working manually. The percentage of productivity increased the more proficient they became with the tool.

To illustrate this benefit, consider that a typical midsize company in the United States employs 28 lawyers and reviews 4,850 contracts annually. With ReviewAI, each of these lawyers can unlock capacity – 51.5% more – and that same team of 28 lawyers can now process 2,498 more contracts annually.

That’s the same as adding nine lawyers to the team.

A Better Way to Review Invoices

The competitive advantage that AI has brought to functions like contract lifecycle management is now coming to invoice review. With InvoiceAI, general counsel and in-house counsel will finally be able to stop wasting precious time on tedious invoicing tasks. While legal AI technology handles your first-pass review, you can focus on more important things.

Onit’s founding principle is to help lawyers more effectively practice law, and InvoiceAI is a critical new tool to make that goal a reality.

AI-enabled legal invoice review from Onit and SimpleLegal will be available in May 2021. To learn more about InvoiceAI and how AI can improve your legal invoice review, contact Onit today or email [email protected].

Onit Welcomes Brad Rogers as Its Senior Vice President of Strategy and Growth

Brad Rogers, Senior Vice President of Strategy and Growth, OnitToday, we are excited to announce that Brad Rogers has joined Onit as Senior Vice President of Strategy and Growth.

For many Onit customers, he doesn’t need an introduction. He’s very familiar with legal operations and transformation, as he most recently served as Chief Operations Officer and Chief of Staff for Advocacy and Oversight at a Fortune Global 100 company. While there, he held a leadership role in building legal operations capabilities designed to drive productivity and cost reductions.

In his new role, Brad focuses on developing, executing and sustaining corporate strategic initiatives that advance Onit’s aggressive growth trajectory and innovation. This is an area he’s well-versed in, having more than 25 years of transformation, process excellence, strategic planning and legal operations leadership experience at major multinational corporations, including Bank of America, GE and JPMorgan Chase. He also holds an MBA in Competitive Strategy and Quantitative Methods from Fordham University, a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master Black Belt in Six Sigma Quality and Change Management.

Podcast: Brad Rogers Discusses What is Driving Change in Legal

In Brad’s view, the legal industry is primed for transformation, not unlike that seen in healthcare two decades ago. Leaders in law are now thinking differently about how to drive efficiency, effectiveness and value.  The transition – which was happening well before remote working – is accelerating, with new operating models that are built on what he sees as the four major drivers of change in the industry. These include technology, the rise of legal operations, the replacement cost revolution and business model innovation.

To hear more of Brad Rogers’ insights on how the industry is poised for transformation, you can listen to our podcast interview with him (see below.)  You can also read the press release announcement here.

The Future of Contracting: CLM Automation with AI at Lenovo

Every company can benefit from faster and more efficient contracting processes, such as CLM software automation and AI, that enhance risk and spend management, improve revenue and profit margins and increase visibility into counterparty relationships. In a recent webinar for the World Commerce and Contracting Association, the Lenovo Legal Department described a transformation journey that can deliver value to any business.

The webinar paints a picture of the ideal overall transformation of the legal function, going from a bespoke system of subject matter experts to a legal function that combines that bespoke talent with standardized operations and digital efficiencies. The result is a legal department that’s digital, scalable and value-driven. This is achieved through the right combination of contract lifecycle management (CLM) and artificial intelligence (AI).

The Pillars of Lenovo’s CLM Automation and AI Journey

Lenovo identified three ideal outcomes that guide contract management transformation.

  1. Centralize – Your organization should have a single legal team – not geographically, but operationally. Centralization enables agile support for both the legal function and the enterprise as a whole. It also allows the legal function better flexibility to support new business areas and a greater ability to align resources with tasks.
  2. Standardize – Once you’ve centralized your legal function, you want to create and reinforce standardization across all activities. This includes enhanced and consistent documentation, harmonized workflows and standardized R&Ps for legal and other stakeholders in the organization, among other things.
  3. Digitize – A modern legal function is built around system-based workflows with increasing automation. Digitizing increases visibility into the E2E process and improves your reporting capabilities. It has also proven crucial for helping businesses navigate pandemic disruptions, thanks to solutions like CLM with e-signature capabilities.

Improving Efficiency by 30% with Contract AI

"It's not just a matter of looking at the CLM system and the capabilities. It’s really understanding the journey that you're going to go through and having the right partner to be with you. For us, we needed flexibility. We needed to have strategic discussions with stakeholders at our partners' organization, both from Duff & Phelps and Onit. When we were selecting our [CLM] solution, those were key elements.”AI is critical to the CLM automation process, according to the Lenovo team, because it not only improves the efficiency of the work, but it’s also actually doing some of the work for you. AI-powered CLM software helps remove the productivity bottleneck that plagues many areas of the legal function today.

While CLM software and AI have already established a strong foothold in legal departments across the country, their prevalence is only going to grow in the coming years. By 2023, Gartner estimates that 90% of multinational global enterprises and 50% of regional midsize organizations will have invested in CLM solutions, and that AI will bring 30% more efficiency to the contract negotiation and document completion processes in organizations that deploy leading CLM solutions.

CLM handles your contracting from end to end, starting with legal review intake and leading you through redlining, drafting and negotiation to approval and execution, and finally creating a repository and empowering intelligent reporting to support informed decision-making. CLM with AI does all those things even more accurately and efficiently.

The panel walked through the major goals of any successful CLM automation and AI program:

  • Faster and cheaper contracting
  • Enhanced risk management
  • Data analytics
  • Visibility
  • Revenue and profit improvement
  • Spend management
  • AI capabilities

Additionally, the webinar highlights a number of key themes that are critical to anyone on the CLM transformation journey, including:

  • Lenovo’s CLM evolution and transformation roadmap
  • Multi-year goals related to their contract management technology
  • Why the culture must eat change management for breakfast
  • The benefits and ROI of a single CLM platform
  • How AI is driving the future for its enhanced vision

Download the webinar here to learn more about Lenovo’s strategy for a global rollout of CLM technology and why AI is key to the services delivery model of the future.
